Not much doubt about what this needs to be... my bedroom. This was used as the general junk storage room for years, and I've now been working on it bit by bit on and off for years more. Frankly, seeing it today, you wouldn't guess at the latter (largely because a bunch of other stuff has got spread around it for various reasons, primarily child-related) and it really needs to be done - not just in general terms, but also because it's one of the things standing in the way of the reorganisation we need to do to clear a bedroom for my daughter, who really wants and needs her own room. I've got the day off tomorrow, and I'm hoping to make at least a dent in it. It's one of those rooms that just looks like one huge hopeless pile, but I've made a list of areas in it that I can tackle. This isn't exhaustive, but if I could get all of these done then it would be a very big improvement and would be easier to see what else needed doing. So here we are: - Cupboard
- Children's things
- Bedding
- Cards
- Wedding souvenirs
- Mending pile
- Old laptop
- Shoe cleaning stuff
- Paperwork
If I had more time I'd write notes on what needs to be done for each of those, but no matter; that's a good start. Let's see if I can get some of that done tomorrow.

Good grief, I forgot to put the mini-chest-of-drawers (basically a large nightstand) on that list. I mean, obviously that wasn't meant to be a complete list, but the point is that this one needed to go to the dump (all right, recycling centre), since one of the drawers was broken and so it wasn't in good enough condition to pass on. I have very few days on which I'm free to take stuff to the recycling centre, so I'm really glad I remembered about that one today, especially since I had some other stuff I wanted to take. Annoyingly, the two nearest recycling centres were closed today, but there was still one I could get to that was less than ten miles away, so it wasn't too bad. Here's how I did on the list today: - Cupboard
- Children's things
Bedding - now all put away, apart from one single duvet which I've left on the bottom of my bed for the times my son comes into my bed before wake-up time and steals my duvet.- Cards
Wedding souvenirs - sorted through, picked out a few bits and pieces, put all the rest into a box in the attic in case my husband wants to look through them at some point.- Mending pile
- Old laptop
- Shoe cleaning stuff
- Paperwork
Mini-chest-of-drawers - took to recycling centre, along with the other stuff I wanted to take.
Also took a couple of books and some old tops of my husband's to the charity shop, and had some 'me time' - browsed round books in town, had lunch at my laptop reading stuff, did some of my own writing. A lovely and productive day off!

Phew! OK - long time since I've posted, I know, but I have significant progress to report. I've been working on it piecemeal, just finding a few things to put away/get rid of here and there as and when. However, I recognised that there were three items in particular that were going to be a lot more difficult: - The pine chest*
- The cupboard
- My old laptop
*I know I didn't mention this on the original list; at that point I hadn't decided whether or not to get rid of it, because it was a lovely chest (apart from the lid having come off its hinges, which was a nuisance). However, I was figuring out how on earth to make space for the things I definitely did want to keep, and just hit the point of "You know what, I want the space more than I want to keep that chest", and, click, I was ready to get rid of it.
The issue with the first two items was just that they were a bit too big for me to load into my car and drive somewhere. The issue with the laptop was that I still hadn't figured out how to put my old e-mail onto my new computer (SIXTEEN MONTHS after changing computers) and was in a state of acute anxiety about the whole thing, but didn't want to get rid of the laptop until I'd done that. Anyway, I had a couple of days of annual leave here and there and decided I'd focus some of my energy on the business of actually getting rid of these things. Here is a status update:
Pine chest - gone
Posted on a local website to see whether anyone with appropriate transport wanted it. Got an affirmative reply by the next day; three days after that we'd succeeded in synchronising our schedules to the point of him turning up and taking the chest. All gone. Nice big space at the end of my bed now.
Cupboard - going
This was in good condition, so I got in touch with a local place who take furniture that can be passed on to others (I didn't think they'd want the chest because of the broken lid). Phoned them, arranged pickup date for tomorrow afternoon. (I've already cleared out all the stuff that was in it, so it's all ready to go.) As a bonus, they can also take my old food processor, so I can also look forward to having a lot more space in the kitchen cupboards by this time tomorrow!
Laptop - ready to go
I finally bit the bullet, started reading through online sites on how to transfer e-mails and trying the different suggestions, and... none of it worked. I still don't know why. BUT... all the reading I'd been doing and things I was trying somehow hit the point where I realised I had a passable grasp on what I was doing. And where I thought "Actually, since it did X when I tried Y, I wonder if trying Z would work?" And I did. And it did. So now I have my old e-mail saved in accessible format on this computer. And now the old computer CAN GO! And I am the IT CHAMPION!
So... that, as well as the bits and bobs already moved, is the progress I've made. I'll try to shift more stuff tomorrow, and report back.
