I figure I'll have a shot at posting my weights here, so that I can see what progress I'm making. At the beginning of December, I finally faced up to the fact that I needed to lose quite a bit of weight, stepped on the scales, and got started. I'm not doing anything fancy diet-wise - just 1. cutting out all the crazy snacking on chocolate and other goodies that I was doing and aiming to keep that to an occasional treat, and 2. being more regular and consistent with exercise. So far, this seems to be working:
Initial weight: 80.6 kg, or almost 12 stone 10 lb by my calculations End of Dec: 79.7 kg (that's with Christmas festivities, so good going, huh?) Tonight: 77.4 kg.
Hooray! That's 3.2 kg lost, which is around half a stone. And my BMI has dropped just over a point, from 28.2 to 27. Definite progress.
I still have a long way to go - I'm aiming to get down to around 11 st, which is just under 70 kg. (Sorry about all the switching between metric and Imperial - I'm old-fashioned enough to think in Imperial, but our scale does kilograms, so I'm working this in both.) Less would be nice but I think that's realistic; my natural weight twelve years and two children ago seemed to be around 10 st 10 lb, so I figure I should allow for it to be at least a few pounds more now. I'll see how it goes.
My plan is to weigh myself approximately every month, so that I can see some progress - I'm prepared for it to be slow and gradual, since I'm still eating plenty and not trying to cut back overall, just aiming (so far successfully) to cut back on the food binges. So, could take a year, all told, could take two. My main goal is to stick with it and not lose heart. I'll try to update at the end of February/beginning of March and see whether I've managed to lose any more (or, at the very least, avoid putting any back on!)

You are doing really well DrSarah. Yes, we are all into kilograms here too but I have to know new born babies’ weights in lb and oz Ive got 3 kilos to loose. I try and stick to only 500cals of food on Tuesday and Thursdays nut haven’t been to successful with that lately. All the chocolate and ice creams are gone and Ive told DH not to buy them anymore, I eat them before he has a chance anyway-and then i get in troubleI At work there are ALWAYS nice biscuits available- I need to forget about them! Its Summer here so I thought it would be easier to lose weight but we are doing too much socializing!! too much wine!!

Oh, well - 77.1 kg. Had hoped for better but at least I haven't put any on! Need to keep finding time to exercise, and I'll try to eat a bit less at meals (nothing major; that's just counterproductive).
Judy, thank you for your support which I do appreciate! Good luck with losing weight, but, as a doctor, I'm worried about you saying you're aiming for two days a week on 500 cals. That's starvation rations! It's horrible for your body, means you can't concentrate on what you're doing all day... and it isn't even that helpful for weight loss, because it only convinces your body that you're going through a time of privation, and actually leads to your metabolism slowing down overall and losing weight more slowly. (That's even apart from the fact that it's setting you up to binge on high-calorie foods because your body will be so desperate for food.) Please - it's a really bad idea and I hate to hear about people messing with their bodies that way.
Meanwhile, on to the next month for me. Let's see if I can just increase the exercise a bit and cut back a little bit at mealtimes, and see if I can keep that up for a month.

75.2 kg!! Yay!
I've been looking at where I could cut out some unnecessary calories. One thing I noticed was that I was in the habit of snacking when I got in to give myself an energy boost - I'd managed to change this from chocolate to healthier things like yoghurt-coated raisins and cheese, but it still added up to quite a few extra calories. So I decided to try having this only on days when I really felt I needed it - which promptly meant I hardly ever did. Don't think I've had that snack since I last posted here.
And I was typically having quite high-calorie cheeses with my bread roll at lunchtime. I still do that on days when I'm at work, but on home days I've been aiming to have chicken or tuna instead so that I can get the same protein boost with fewer calories.
For dinner, I've been trying to eat a bit less of whatever meat we're having. This was particularly successful on Tuesday, when we were having burgers and hot dogs - it had reached the point where I was the only one eating the hot dogs, but could put away three or four of them. So I've just stopped cooking those and just have a small burger. And on Thursday, when we have fish, I'm eating one fishcake instead of two. Just making it about eating a bit less all round, rather than anything major.
Well... looks like that's worked. Almost two kilos lost in three weeks - that's... let me see... just over four pounds. Bit more than a pound a week. Total weight loss from the start is 5.4 kg, which is almost twelve pounds (hooray!) My current weight in old money is 11 stone 11.44 lb. Which also means I've lost approximately half of the weight I needed to lose. Progress!!!
Next challenge - keep things stable over Easter. So I hope to be back here this time next week reporting a similar weight (I'm not actually going to be ambitious enough to try to lose any over Easter. If I can maintain my weight where it is or close to it for the week, that'll be good enough for me.) After that, I'll go back to monthly weights again.
Hope things are going well for you, Judy, and for all the rest of you guys.

76.0kg. Sigh. Oh, well - although I did steer clear of the Easter chocolate, we were away at the in-laws for the Easter weekend and that meant a few days of more high-calorie stuff and skipping my usual exercise. Wouldn't have thought it'd make that big of a difference - I enjoyed myself but didn't go crazy about it - but add in natural day-to-day variation and the fact that I don't wear exactly the same things each time when I weigh myself, and there you go.
Anyway, my next goal will be to get down to 75 kg or less by the end of next month.

Weight loss is a constant here Sarah. Good for you. Remember, weight lost slowly is more likely to stay off, rather than quick unsustainable losses.

74.5! Yay!!! I actually just went back upstairs to weigh myself as I didn't believe it. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I didn't think it had been a very good month - I had a lousy cold at the start and just didn't have enough energy to exercise for about a week, and there seemed to be quite a few days when I was so hungry I ended up having an extra snack. I was all set to find out I'd lost nothing. Well, looks like I was still doing something right! Let's see... that means 6.1 kg lost, or 13.3 lb if my overtired brain is calculating it correctly. Wow - almost a stone. Still 4.5 kg to go, though, so must keep plugging away. Thanks so much for the encouragement, Medusahair & Shellie!

70.9!!! It would be nice to be able to claim credit for this being due to awesome willpower on my part, but actually it's mainly down to extreme recent stress killing my appetite. Still, it's the one advantage of being under stress so at least I can enjoy that. I also don't want this to turn into a starvation diet, given the problems that causes with slowing metabolism overall, so I'm not even sure if it's a good idea to lose any next month - if I do, then good, but my main aim will be to hold steady. Figure this month was about two months' worth.
